The Internet is a Great Place to Start

Elon used to sleep on the floor.

When Elon started out as an Entrepreneur in Silicon Valley with his brother Kimbal they were so hard up for cash they rented a small office. They slept on the couch, and a beanbag on the floor.

When you’re just starting out the odds are you don’t have a ton of capital to work with.  This is why Elon recommends starting out online:

“I think for somebody who’s just starting out as an Entrepreneur,I think the Internet is a great place to start because if you’re just starting out, unless you’ve got a ton of capital that somebody gave you or you inherited or something you have to start a company that requires a small amount of capital…

Where it’s heavily weighted toward the intellectual capital in your head…so I think anything to do with software and with the Internet is a really good starting point.”

When Zip2 was acquired by Compaq Elon got $20,000,000 out of the deal.

It would have been impossible for Elon to have done electric cars or rockets right out of the gate because it requires plenty of capital to enter those industries.

In fact even with the over $100 million Elon earned from being the largest shareholder of PayPal when they were acquired by Ebay he went all in with SpaceX and Tesla to the point where he invested every single dollar and had to borrow money to pay his bills.

Elon’s heroic investments of capital, blood, sweat and tears are a big part of the reason why SpaceX and Tesla have been able to survive, thrive and dominate.

The Paradigm Shifting Power of The Internet

When Elon describes the birth of the Internet he often exclaims the invention of the Internet is like humanity acquiring a nervous system.

In his 2020 AxelSpringer Award Talk Elon said of the Internet:

“The Internet…Really the Internet is like a nervous system for humanity.

Whereas previously communication was more like osmosis.  For information to travel someone would have to call someone over the phone.  Or write them a letter.  And then that letter would be carried by a series of people to the destination.

Now communication can happen instantly from any place in the world to anyone and does not need a human to carry it.

This is sort of like at a cellular level you see say a primitive small multicellular creature will communicate via osmosis from one cell to the next or diffusion essentially.

But once you have a more sophisticated organism you have a nervous system.  The speed at which information can travel is much faster.  And the accessibility of information is fundamentally different.

If you want in the middle of the amazon jungle with a satellite connection and you have access to all the world’s information…

Whereas previously even if you live in the library of congress in the US where all the books are, you still would only have access to a fraction of the world’s information.

This is basically humanity becoming a super organism.  To the degree that’s not possible unless you have essentially instant live speed communication from anywhere to anywhere, as opposed to osmosis.  Diffusion.”

The above statement from Elon puts into powerful perspective the power and importance of the Internet.

And Elon lived near the heart of Silicon Valley for decades.  Only recently did Elon move to Texas, where SpaceX now launches rockets from Boca Chica (AKA Starbase).

  • Work Like Hell

    Work Like Hell

Elon Musk’s work ethic is fierce.

This is Elon’s advice for a young Entrepreneur wanting to achieve success:

“Work like hell. I mean you just have to put in 80 to 100 hour weeks every week. [This] improves the odds of success. If other people are putting in 40 hour work weeks and you’re putting in 100 hour work weeks, then even if you’re doing the same thing you know that… you will achieve in 4 months what it takes them a year to achieve.”~Elon Musk

Elon also mentioned a similar point during his 2012 USC Commencement Address.  He said:

“You need to work super hard.  So what does super hard mean?

Well, when my brother and I were starting our first company, instead of getting an apartment, we just rented a small office and we slept on the couch and we showered in the YMCA.

We’re so hard up that we had just one computer.

So the website was up during the day, and I was coding at night.

7 days a week, all the time.

And I, sort of briefly had a girlfriend in that period and in order to be with me, she had to sleep in the office.

So, work hard, like, every waking hour…

Particularly if you’re starting a company.”

Working every waking hour is not for everyone – but it is for people who want to achieve at the highest level.

During vital growth phases of SpaceX and Tesla, Elon worked as many as 120 hours per week and would sleep in the conference room or even on the factory floor.

These days he tends to work 80-90 hours per week, which is still more than twice the amount of someone who works 40 hours per week.

In a PandoMonthly fireside chat Elon explains how companies succeed:

“You only build value in a company if you’re doing hard work to solve tough problems.  That’s why companies are valuable.”

If you are thinking about starting a company realize the more hours you put towards your business the more your business will grow.  The closer you get to Elon’s level of working every waking hour the greater your odds of success will be.

  • Think Multiple Steps Ahead

    Think Multiple Steps Ahead

How to Outthink and Outmaneuver the Competition like Elon Musk.

Elon wins by being ahead of the game and controlling the game by thinking at least one move ahead of the competition.

The intuitive way to think is to deal with the immediate reality around us and react directly.  To win like Elon you need to apply grandmaster chess level thinking.  Elon has contempt for Chess, because there is no fog of war in Chess he says.

Elon plays the game of life in hell mode, hence his devilish profile pic which he kept for many months.  Elon is not afraid of the smoke, just ask Joe Rogan and the weed and whisky he drank on his show.

If you are living life in easy mode or even normal mode you will lose versus the person battling their way through hell on a daily basis.

The point is not simply to say what you think.  But to think about what people will think about what you say and craft your statements accordingly.

  • Lead by Example (Show Up Early and Stay Late)

Lead by Example (Show Up Early and Stay Late)

How to Lead Like Elon: Show Up Early, Stay Late, and Embed Yourself in the Action.

Elon leads his companies from the trenches, not some holier than thou ivory tower.

At SpaceX offices he has a cubicle like everyone else, not a walled off office.  He says this is because doors prevent communication, so they use cubicles so communication can flow more easily.

At Tesla he has a desk on the factory floor.  His area is very clean and on point, with few items to feature.  All that was on the desk was a computer, sunglasses and his keys.

By being deeply entrenched in the technology Elon is able to expedite efficiencies and fix problems in real time.

Elon identifies as an Engineer more so than a suit and tie CEO: “I encounter CEO’s who don’t know the details of their technology and that’s ridiculous to me.

Elon started from the first prototypes and earned his place at the top.  His willingness to stay hungry and keep working hard despite massive success is a big part of what keeps his companies on top.

Elon does not walk around SpaceX campus in a suit like he owns the place – even though he does own the place.

He lives in a humble $69,000 boxabl house ($50k + upgrades) he rents on site.

Elon has also been known to sleep on the Tesla factory floor in a sleeping bag or in the board room.

When Elon bought Twitter recently he slept there also, in a library room.

He also created this shirt as a play on #staywoke merch he found at Twitter.

  • Never Give Up

    Never Give Up

    elon-musk-never-give-up

Persistence is how you overcome resistance.  An interviewer asked Elon what he thought about the challenges with launching an orbital rocket in the early days of SpaceX.

Interviewer: After that third rocket failure did you think about giving up?

Elon: Never. I don’t ever give up. I mean (if I was going to give up) I’d have to be dead or completely incapacitated.

Try, try harder, and try again.

And believe in yourself.  You can only achieve great success when you keep trying and truly believe you can.

  • Be Willing to Sacrifice

    Be Willing to Sacrifice

“If you don’t sacrifice for what you want, what you want will be the sacrifice.” ~Elon Musk

Tesla faced a severe threat of death during the Model Three production round.

The company was bleeding money like crazy and if we didn’t solve these problems in a very short period of time we would die.

It was extremely difficult to solve them…

So I started working seven days a week, sleeping in the factory.  I worked in the paint shop, general assembly, body shop…

Interviewer: Do you ever worry about yourself imploding because it’s too much?

Elon: “Yeah, absolutely.  Noone should put this many hours into work.  This is not good.  They should not do this.  This is very painful…

It hurts my brain and my heart.  It hurts.  This is not recommended for anyone.  I just did it because if I didn’t there was a good chance Tesla would die.”

Elon is committed to the success of Tesla and SpaceX above all else it seems, and this gives him a competitive edge.

While Elons competitors are spending time with their families, watching TV, or spending time in one of a million other ways, Elon is grinding.  And the grind creates greatness.

Sometimes getting the win means losing out and sacrificing other areas of your life.

If you choose to work 90 hours a week your personal life will suffer.

And the harder you try to win the more sacrifices you will need to make in other areas of life.

Priorities are everything.  Priorities dictate how you allocate your time.

The thing about priorities is they are a continuum…so you need to remind yourself on a regular basis what matters to you.  Reminders are powerful.

This is why every single day you should write down your priorities.

Winners win because winners take the actions needed to win.
So figure out what you need to do…

    Write it down…

    And do it!

  • Continually Improve

    Continually Improve

Elon said that the single best piece of advice he can give is to:

“Constantly think about how you can be doing things better.”

I think it’s very important to have a feedback loop, where you’re constantly thinking about what you’ve done and how you could be doing it better.

I think that’s the single best piece of advice: Constantly think about how you could be doing things better and questioning yourself.

I doubt if Elon would advocate questioning yourself if it afflicts you with analysis paralysis that stops you from taking action to make progress in the direction of your goals.

Know yourself.  Question yourself insofar as it enables you to better yourself.

Many words could describe Elon Musk: Genius, Determined, Successful…but perhaps the word that describes him most of all is: driven.

If you want to emulate Elon’s success, find the drive in yourself to work hard and execute on making your dreams a reality.

The more hours you work the greater your odds of success are.

You’re not going to create revolutionary cars or rockets on 40 hours a week.  It just won’t work. Colonizing Mars isn’t going to happen on 40 hours a week.

    ~Vogue, Sept 21st, 2015

The only thing better than a perfectly executed plan is perfect execution of a better plan.

Start by finding your drive and refining your execution plan:

As you execute on your goals and action items, question how you can improve your plan and actions.

Invest in your success by putting in as much work and effort towards your business as humanly possible.

  • Seeing is Believing

Why would Elon Musk choose to sleep on the factory floor you might ask?

Because while he was asking Tesla employees to work around the clock to achieve company goals he was right there with them.

Elon on the factory floor by Grok

    Elon leads by example.

Leading by example is a powerful way to lead.

When Elon needs to stay at a factory to get something done he stays and will get the work done.

On a Clubhouse app audio recording Elon shared how he slept on the factory floor, with the smell of iron filings in the air, because he wanted Tesla employees to see him there giving it his all for Tesla and the team…

Those who have seen Elon sleeping on a factory floor have witnessed Elon’s level of work ethos.

    Seeing is believing.

But if you see something online you should be more careful with thinking what you see happened in real life. Image in this post is made by Elon’s Ai company Grok.
