  • Find Your Reason

    Find Your Reason

Beyond Money: Finding Meaning in Your Work.

He who has a why to live for can bear almost any how~Nietzsche

Success and satisfaction with your work are not all about making money.

Meaning is an important part of existence and work.

Elon had more money than he needed at the age of 27 but he has pressed on, working like mad without skipping a beat, and he has been changing the world in every step of the process.

Elon recommends being bold and choosing to do something important.  You need a reason to get out of bed in the morning.

Not only can working on important projects give you great financial rewards, being mission focused supplies the satisfaction that comes with knowing you are changing the world for the better.

Take powerful actions because they are intrinsically important.

When asked about his legacy by GQ Elon said:

I think what matters is the actions, not what people think of me in the future.  I’ll be long dead.  But the actions that I take, will they have been useful?

    Looks fade.  Legacies change.

Utility builds over time.  Usefulness compounds.

    Stay useful.  Helpful actions last.

  • Be Extremely Tenacious

    Be Extremely Tenacious

The Power of Extreme Persistence: Lessons from Elon Musk’s Near-Bankruptcies

Here is a definition for the word Tenacious

Adjective Not readily relinquishing a position, principle, or course of action; determined.

The determination to keep going when the going gets tough is what saved SpaceX and Tesla when both were on the verge of bankruptcy.

Elon poured all of his money from the sale of PayPal into these companies so they could survive and his tenacity in doing so saved them from insolvency.

The perseverance and hard work Elon has shown in making every company he has worked with a success reminds me of this quote from Steve Jobs:

I’m convinced that about half of what separates the successful entrepreneurs from the non-successful ones is pure perseverance.

Elon met Steve Jobs once and said Steve was a jerk to him after Google co-founder Larry Page introduced him…but nonetheless Elon has praised Steve and uses Apple products like the iPhone (in combination with PC’s) to this day.

Despite the snubbing from Steve Jobs Elon seems to respect him for his tenacity and craftsmanship. Elon shared this video below where Jobs shares a Rock Tumbler metaphor. I recommend you check it out:

  • Elon Musk’s Magic Numbers

    Elon Musk’s Magic Numbers

Certain numbers have a special “magic” significance for Elon.

Elon uses the numbers four and 69 often.  He was born 69 days after 4/20 and this is one of the reasons why.  His Mom’s name is Maye and Star Wars day is May 4th “May the 4th be with you.

4th times a charm!” he said when SpaceX’s 4th attempt at an orbital rocket finally made it to space.  After the first three were shattered into many pieces.

    Elon is 420 Friendly

Elon’s most famous podcast is likely the one with Joe Rogan where he drank a glass of whiskey and smoked weed.

Elon is well aware of the widespread appeal of marijuana and has integrated it into his communication and organic marketing in a number of interesting ways.

The above tweet got Elon Musk a $20,000,000 fine from the SEC.

He then tweeted again and said: Worth it.

Elon actually ended up profiting from this exchange because following this event Elon purchased $20 million dollars in Tesla common shares directly from Tesla.

On Oct 20th of 2018 TSLA stock was worth $69.02 a share. That money has now increased in value by more than 10X.  Which means the $20 million Elon invested in 2018 is now worth over $200,000,000 in additional stock value.

Clearly Elon is getting the last lol. He probably laughed when he posted the tweet about the SEC below in 2020.

In another interview Elon said “I want to be clear.  I do not respect the SEC.

We hear you loud and clear, Elon.  It’s important to not let people or government groups push you around, but it’s also important to remember Elon’s description of the government as “A corporation in the limit with a monopoly on violence.”

Being 4:20 friendly will make you more friends than enemies.   So integrate the number 420 into your marketing when possible and the message will be effective with the massive 420 friendly community.

Elon has also expressed support for psychedelics like mushrooms and in a CodeCon interview when asked “Curious to know what role you think psychedelics might have in addressing the more destructive tendencies of humanity.”  Elon replied: “I think generally people should be open to psychedelics.

Burning man is a festival where plenty of psychedelics are used and Elon has been multiple times.  He’s even said about Burning Man “Burning man is Silicon Valley.

And Elon certainly means that as a compliment.  Silicon Valley is where Elon spent multiple decades of his life and he speaks highly of his time there.

Silicon Valley has a special spirit about it.  I saw my first Tesla in San Jose (Silicon Valley) and I remember the experience to this day.  There’s something limitless about Silicon Valley, and I think Elon captures it eloquently with this quote:

I’m a Silicon Valley guy. I think people from Silicon Valley can do anything.

Certainly Elon is an excellent example of Silicon Valley greatness being realized…and the best is yet to come.

  • From Prototype to Premium Product

High-End First: How Tesla Funded Innovation by Targeting the Affluent

Tesla started by creating desire via offering a premium product to the affluent.

This is the strategy Musk developed with Tesla when they decided to create the high end luxury Tesla roadster.

Below the strategy is explained with a diagram from the post How Tesla Will Change The World.

Tesla’s Business Plan involves three main steps:

    1. High-priced low-volume car for the super rich
    2. Mid-priced mid-volume car for the pretty rich

Then the profits from step 1 & 2 go towards step 3:

    1. Low priced, high volume car for the masses

It seems to me that this is a solid strategy for someone who is considering starting a coaching, consulting, and or membership site business as well.

By serving the most financially affluent first you can help your business create the financial stability and foundation needed to grow.

Once you have established the initial inertia of ongoing income for your business you can afford yourself room to hire and experiment more so you can instigate more innovation.

  • The Recipe for Business Success

The Elon Musk Recipe: How to Create and Scale a Successful Startup

Interviewer: “You’ve mostly created new companies.  What is your recipe for that?”

Elon: “Well I think it’s quite difficult to create a new company and have it be successful.  And generally I do not recommend creating new companies unless you feel very compelled to do so…

It’s quite difficult.  But I mean the basics of starting a company are:

You have to have an idea that is compelling or you have to have a product that you think could be very valuable to the world.

And then you’ve got to find alot of talented people and convince them to do this new thing

Because talented people are already doing something.  So you have to convince them to do the new thing.  And it’s pretty hard to do that.

And then you have to build the company up.  And the company goes through a life cycle.  Like a human.  Or like any animal.  They start out very simple.  Like one cell.  Then a few more cells and then it’s…kind of like a baby, and then a toddler and then the lifecycle of a company is very much like that of a creature, and you have to reinvent the company at every stage.

So this is why some companies get to be a large size and some do not.  It’s because you actually have to reconfigure the company at each of the various stages in its lifecycle.

  • Keep It Simple

“[Simplicity] is our mantra because it gets you both reliability and low cost.” (Discover magazine)

    Simplicity amplifies efficiency.

Keep it simple, because simplicity and efficiency are powerful.

    Punchy statements like:

Tight is right, long is wrong (For time expectations).

Or all input is error (for Tesla) are two examples of simplicity at work.

And my favorite: The best part is no part: It weighs nothing, costs nothing, can’t go wrong.

Think how these statements can apply to your life and work to help you get more done.

    Good luck!

  • Optimize Your Meetings

Elon Musk on Meetings: Avoid, Shorten, or Walk Out

In a powerful letter to his employees he explained some tips for productivity.

The first three tips were about meetings.

    Here they are:

    1. Excessive meetings are the blight of big companies and almost always get worse over time. Please get [out] of all large meetings, unless you’re certain they are providing value to the whole audience, in which case keep them very short.

    2. “Also get rid of frequent meetings, unless you are dealing with an extremely urgent matter. Meeting frequency should drop rapidly once the urgent matter is resolved.”

    3. Walk out of a meeting or drop off a call as soon as it is obvious you aren’t adding value. It is not rude to leave, it is rude to make someone stay and waste their time.”

These strategies are key to achieving operational efficiency.

Saying Is what I’m doing as useful as it could be?” (STVP Future Fest) is a smart way to keep yourself on point.

Compare Elon’s thinking with the culture of many other companies – where plenty of employees dread long meetings due to their irrelevance and drudgery – and it’s clear that Elon’s meetings methods are one of the many reasons he and his teams are winning.

  • We Live in The Most Exciting Time of All Time

We Live in The Most Exciting Time of All Time

From Awesome Rockets to AI Robots: Get Excited for the Future!

“Earth is the cradle of humanity. You cannot stay in the cradle forever…

It is time to go out there…be out there among the stars, expand the scope and scale of human consciousness…

    I find that incredibly exciting!

That makes me glad to be alive!”

    ~Elon Musk

Being excited about your work will help you create exciting results.

“We live in a very exciting time.  If you look at the whole course of human history and humanity this is the time of the greatest technological growth in history…and it seems to be accelerating.” (Tech week 2021)

So don’t settle for an unexciting career: Strive for an excellent future.

Your expectations and efforts today will determine your outcomes tomorrow.

Rocket launches are one exciting element of our fast coming future.

The rate of rockets launched is increasing year over year, as are the exciting technology they enable.  Starlink satellite Internet has opened up access to the Internet to millions of people who did not have it before.

Undoubtedly the new entrants to the online ecosystem will create exciting new innovations in the Ai and other fields as well.

At Italian TechWeek Elon shared his thought on the exciting time we live in:

“We live in a very exciting time.

I mean if you look at the whole history of the world, humanity, this is a time of the greatest technological growth in history.

And it seems to be accelerating.”

So true.  We live in the most powerful and exciting time of all time.

Not many people saw Google coming, or Facebook, or the vast majority of the information from history being available at your fingertips on a super computer you keep in your pocket…

But it all happened and more.

Technological innovations depend on the people who use technology and the Internet…and there are more people with technology and Internet access than ever before.

As of January 2023, there were 5.16 billion internet users worldwide, which is 64.4 percent of the global population.  And that number continues to increase until it inevitably hits 100% and we are all officially cyborgs.

    elon-musk-excited-and-starship-in-background-grok

    “You’re already a cyborg. Most people don’t realize you’re already a cyborg.”

    ~Elon Musk

The image above of Elon and the Starship was created by Grok Imagine.

Elon’s company Starlink is making high speed Internet available to many parts of the world that did not have any Internet at all before.

Due to the fact of a larger Internet user base than ever unpredictably awesome innovations will undoubtedly happen in the future also, likely at a faster rate than we are used to.

Elon is making those awesome innovations a reality faster than anyone else alive.

It pays to pay attention to Elon because the future is where you’ll be spending the rest of your life.

    Get excited about the future!

Who knows what AI will make possible?

Since AI can leverage trillions of pieces of information simultaneously the one certainty is it will not disappoint.

The Humanoid Robot Future Will Create Abundance

The robot future is coming” Elon says.

What will robots be able to do in the future?

They will drive for us, cook for us (whatever we want made perfectly like a 3 Star Michelin chef every time), cut and style our hair flawlessly, mow our lawn automatically, and do most manual labor tasks that cause humans to dread their jobs.

    And that’s just the beginning…

Robots and technology are literally out of this world.

Recently SpaceX launched the largest flying object of all time…

It was initially called BFR (Big FUCKING Rocket) then renamed to Starship…

And Starships were meant to fly.

Largest Flying Object of All Time

    Indeed Starship did fly…

    On 4/20, 2023…

Then it exploded in mid air.

But unlike its unrelated Soviet predecessor the N1 it was not the largest non-atomic explosion of all time…likely because Starship used a good amount of it’s fuel achieving 25 miles of flight.

But if it were not for the first unsuccessful Falcon rocket launches would SpaceX be what it is today?

    Certainly not.

    Pain can be powerful…

    No pain no gain.

Elon says he still has PTSD from the early failed SpaceX launches.

But the trauma he and the SpaceX team suffered helped them take the necessary actions to ensure the rocket improved and achieved orbit.

The future will rip apart the world as we know it like the rocket pieces above…

But the changes that might seem difficult at first will transform into a fantastic future over time…

A future where people are far safer in cars, freed from tedious tasks, can vacation in Space, and even live on the Moon or Mars.

    Successful Starship Test Flights

Since then there have been successful flights including the first phase booster being caught by arms from the Mechazilla launch platform.

Starship is the first launching system capable of making life multiplanetary and will take 100 people to Mars per trip.

Starship has had numerous multiple successful flights since its initial explosion and has a Mars mission on the way in 2026.

    Get excited about the future!

    It’s coming fast.

Work on projects that harness the amazing power of technology.

Don’t blindly cling to the past.

The ability to adapt and upgrade your skills with the changing times will empower you.

    Test drive a Tesla.

Make the most of today but live like you’ll live forever…because thanks to the power of AI maybe you will.

Or maybe AI will destroy us all.  Elon has said developing AI is like summoning the Devil.

Optimus Robots and Ai Will Make Everyone Wealthy

Elon has said the humanoid robot business is bigger than the car business.

“The most likely outcome is that AI and robots make everyone wealthy.” are his specific words in this recent tweet.

And if you think about it human labour costs are more than vehicle costs so this makes sense.

Elon and Making Artificial Intelligence Actual

Elon founded the company OpenAi as well as xAi and Grok.

  • Win The War

    Win The War

The War Mindset: How to Dominate in Business and Life.

    Business is a battle.

Find yourself on the victorious side of the battles you face in life.

Life is hard but ignoring the warlike character of human life is harder.

Those who find the will inside to attack life as if it is war and survive are those who are most likely to thrive.

Elon says: “I’ve lost a few battles but I always win the war.

The outcome of business is rarely fair.

Business is like war.  If you think otherwise you may lose to a competitor who treats his business with the seriousness of a warrior.

Having a war-like mind state will help you capture more profit and more market share.

  • Think Multiple Steps Ahead

    Think Multiple Steps Ahead

How to Outthink and Outmaneuver the Competition like Elon Musk.

Elon wins by being ahead of the game and controlling the game by thinking at least one move ahead of the competition.

The intuitive way to think is to deal with the immediate reality around us and react directly.  To win like Elon you need to apply grandmaster chess level thinking.  Elon has contempt for Chess, because there is no fog of war in Chess he says.

Elon plays the game of life in hell mode, hence his devilish profile pic which he kept for many months.  Elon is not afraid of the smoke, just ask Joe Rogan and the weed and whisky he drank on his show.

If you are living life in easy mode or even normal mode you will lose versus the person battling their way through hell on a daily basis.

The point is not simply to say what you think.  But to think about what people will think about what you say and craft your statements accordingly.
